Azure Migrate Part 3: Assessment Overview

Introduction

Azure Migrate is a tool from Microsoft that helps organizations plan and execute their migration to Azure. One of the key features of Azure Migrate is the Assessment feature.

What is an Assessment?

An assessment with the Discovery and Assessment tool measures the readiness and estimates the effect of migrating on-premises servers to Azure. It provides a point-in-time snapshot of data.

Types of Assessments

There are four types of assessments you can create using Azure Migrate:

  • Azure VM Assessments: To migrate your on-premises servers to Azure virtual machines.
  • Azure SQL Assessments: To migrate your on-premises SQL servers from your VMware environment to Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • Azure App Service Assessments: To migrate on-premises web apps from your VMware environment to Azure App Service.
  • Azure VMware Solution (AVS) Assessments: To migrate your on-premises servers to Azure VMware Solution.

Assessment Details

An Azure VM assessment provides two sizing criteria options:

  1. Performance-based Assessments: These make recommendations based on collected performance data. The VM size recommendation is based on CPU and RAM-utilization data.
  2. As-is on-premises Assessments: These don’t use performance data to make recommendations. The VM size recommendation is based on the on-premises server size.

CSV Import into Azure Migrate

Azure Migrate also supports importing and assessing servers without deploying an appliance. This feature is particularly useful in the initial stages of migration planning when you may not be able to deploy the appliance due to pending organizational or security constraints.

Conclusion

Azure Migrate’s Assessment feature is a powerful tool for organizations planning to migrate their on-premises servers to Azure. It provides detailed insights into the readiness of the servers for migration, the estimated costs, and the potential impact of the migration.
